FPA Orange CountyWhat We Know Now: Planners Reflect on 2009

Their comments are raw- “anguish, insomnia, weight gain, panic”-and contradictory-“ After almost three decades in practice, I never could have imagined this,” and, “No, it wasn’t really a shock.” They’re also pragmatic-“ It’s cyclical, relax!”-and painfully wry: “We now have a lower minimum balance for a new client account, since $500,000 accounts are down to $300,000."

There’s the optimistic-“Good people continue to do good things”-and the snide: “CNBC is a joke.” There are more than a few who acknowledge their disappointment - “The experts really don’t know anymore than I do”-and the obvious: “We now know that annual losses of 40 to 50 percent in the stock market are not just theoretical.” And there are almost too many to count who mention risk, and the lack of in-depth understanding of the concept by clients and planners.

COMMITTEE FOCUS: FPA PRO BONO

FPA Pro Bono is looking for volunteers for its upcoming events: Junior Achievement Day (May 28th) and a Fall Event.

Do you feel privileged in your life? Or at least, got "it" going on? Would you like to share these feelings with others? Well, we at FPA OCC have two great upcoming events that will allow you, the members of this dynamic organization, the opportunity to share your "wealth" (of knowledge, that is) with those less fortunate than yourselves!

One more thing.due to the fact that funding has been down for Junior Achievement this year, we are asking FPA OCC members to donate directly to Junior Achievement to continue providing the excellent financial education material to the youth in our communities. Because of the limited funds this year, FPA OCC volunteers have a limited number of classes we can teach this year. But, if we, as a group, are able to raise funds, we can increase our presence at another event! Junior Achievement has informed us that each class's material costs $500 so our initial goal is to raise funds to support 20 classes or $10,000. Any amount you donate is greatly appreciated!

If you feel it is a worthy cause to help support FPA OCC's financial education efforts, we would be grateful for you to send a check made payable to "Junior Achievement of Orange County" and put "FPA OCC/JA event" in the memo section of the check. Junior Achievement will send you an Acknowledgment Letter with the tax exempt identification number for your use in claiming a charitable contribution on your 2010 tax returns. Please note that if you use the Junior Achievement website to make the donation, FPA OCC will NOT receive credit as there is no way Junior Achievement can track it internally. So, please use the "old-fashioned" method; that is, write the check. We thank you for your generosity and concern for our youth!

PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE

Since September 2008 some advisers controlled costs by reducin g staff. Others reduced the hours for current staff and delayed additional hiring. Now that we are beginning to see signs of recovery, advisers are asking, "When should I re-hire?"
